Most often collected are pennies, because they are cheap and you can collect a set of all the years since 1945, although you probably won't ever get a 1909 S VDB or some of the other scarce dates and mint marks.

US silver coins are collected primarily for their silver value, although I like the looks of the Walking Liberty half dollar.

Krugerrands (gold coins) are collected for their gold value, not their scarcity or their beauty.
