Problem with US education system is that while primary schools foster learning ground for general knowledge, most children do not develop good test taking skills until they reach the age to take the SATs. That's why they cannot compete with a lot of Asian and Indian students who are very much focused on tests and goal oriented methods and end up at top ivy league schools where it matters the most for getting good jobs.
